High School Sponsorship Program

Even though the Belizean government does fund elementary education, this is not the case for high schools. Parents are required to pay tuition averaging $600.00 per year. This does not include the cost of uniforms, books, bussing and extracurricular fees. This puts it well beyond the affordability of most families in Armenia village. The tragic result is that many young people marry very young and have little hope of finding decent work.

In August 2018, IHF setup a fund for our trades skills students to apply for high school scholarships.

The reason for limiting it to our trades students is that our teachers have been able to assess learning, motivation, and discipline.

Upon acceptance, students and parents must sign a contractual agreement which includes:

Parents:

  • agree to pay for busing, food, and any other expense as required by high school during school for September 2018 to June 2019
  • oversee that student attends high school daily.
  • encourage student to study daily and to complete assignments
  • agree to allow student to participate in community service projects as required, and assist on the IHF LOFORNA Base

Students:

  • agree to attend classes daily
  • complete assignments as required
  • maintain a GPA of 2.5 and over
  • through being an active member of the Armenia Youth Group, each student must complete 100 hours of community service per school year
  • assist in fundraising activities to raise enough money to sponsor another youth to attend high school for next school year
  • to maintain monthly correspondence with sponsors

Thanks to an overwhelming response, as of September 2018, our first group of promising young people are experiencing something they never thought possible…a high school education.
